Best MT4 EAs in 2026: Does Anyone Still Build for MT4?

MT4 launched over two decades ago, MetaQuotes has long pushed everyone towards MT5, and yet - at the time of writing - a very large share of retail traders still run MT4, because their broker offers it and their tools were built for it. So: does anyone still build serious EAs for MT4, and should you buy one in 2026?

The honest state of MT4

• It still works. Brokers continue to support it, and an EA that respects sound risk principles doesn't care how old the platform is. What an expert advisor is hasn't changed since 2005.
• New development has thinned. Most active vendors now lead with MT5 and port to MT4 as an afterthought - or not at all. Much of the MT4 catalogue is legacy stock: EAs built years ago, maintained lightly or abandoned.

The specific risks of buying MT4 EAs in 2026

1. Abandonware. An EA whose developer moved on won't be updated when your broker changes server behaviour, symbols or quote precision. Check when the product was last updated and whether support answers.
2. Survivor marketing. Long-lived MT4 EAs advertise their age as proof of quality. But a ten-year-old product page proves the business survived, not the strategy - many old EAs have been re-tuned repeatedly, which is rolling curve-fitting wearing a heritage badge.
3. Legacy risk logic. The MT4 era normalised grids and martingales. A striking share of classic MT4 "consistent earners" are grid systems or martingales under the hood. Read the settings list before the sales page.

The checklist, MT4 edition

• Was the backtest done with quality tick data and realistic, variable costs - or MT4's default modelling?
• Is there out-of-sample evidence and a live verified record on a current broker feed?
• Is the developer demonstrably active in 2026?
• Does anything in the inputs grow position size after losses?
• Does the vendor publish honest drawdown figures, including open drawdown?
