MT4 vs MT5 for EAs: Which Should You Build On in 2026?
Short answer: if you are starting fresh in 2026, build on MT5. If your broker, your existing tools, or a strategy you already trust are MT4-only, MT4 remains perfectly serviceable. Neither choice will make or break a strategy - the logic and the testing discipline matter far more than the platform.
What actually differs
Both platforms come from MetaQuotes and both run Expert Advisors - automated programs that trade for you. If you are new to the ecosystem, our primer on what MetaTrader is and what an Expert Advisor is will get you oriented. The real differences for EA builders:
- Language: MT4 uses MQL4, MT5 uses MQL5. They look similar but are not compatible - an .ex4 file will not run on MT5 and vice versa.
- Backtester: MT5's Strategy Tester is genuinely better. It supports multi-currency testing, real tick simulation and multi-threaded optimisation. MT4's tester is single-threaded and its default modelling is cruder.
- Markets: MT5 handles exchange-traded instruments, more order types and a proper depth-of-market view. MT4 is forex and CFDs, full stop.
- Timeframes: MT5 offers 21 timeframes to MT4's 9 - useful if your strategy leans on less common charts.
Where MT4 still wins
Fair is fair: MT4 has advantages that keep it alive.
- Library of existing tools. Nearly two decades of indicators, EAs and community code exist for MQL4. If you rely on a specific legacy indicator, it may simply not exist on MT5.
- Simplicity. MQL4 is slightly gentler for beginners poking at code, and the platform itself is lighter.
- Familiarity. Many traders have years of muscle memory on MT4 and see no reason to move.
Where MT5 wins
For anyone building and validating strategies - rather than just running one somebody handed them - MT5's testing engine is the decisive edge. Faster optimisation, better tick modelling and multi-symbol tests all reduce the gap between backtest and live behaviour. That matters because most EA failures are testing failures: strategies that looked brilliant on bad data. Our guides on how to backtest a strategy and tick data vs OHLC backtests cover why modelling quality changes results.
There is also the direction of travel. MetaQuotes has spent years nudging brokers and developers towards MT5. New broker integrations, new features and most active development happen there. MT4 is not disappearing overnight, but it is a maintained legacy product, not a growing one.
Who should pick what
- Pick MT4 if your broker only offers it, you depend on MQL4-only tools, or you are running a proven legacy EA and see no reason to migrate.
- Pick MT5 if you are starting now, you care about backtest quality, you want to trade beyond forex, or you plan to optimise strategies seriously.
- Support both if you build strategies to distribute - the market is still split.
What this means if you use a strategy builder
If you build EAs without writing code, check that your builder exports to the platform your broker runs. Our own tool, Nebula - bias declared, we make it - breeds strategies with a genetic algorithm and exports standard .ex4 and .ex5 files, so the MT4-or-MT5 question becomes a checkbox rather than a rewrite. Every candidate is forced through walk-forward and out-of-sample checks before export; you can read why that matters in our piece on overfitting and walk-forward analysis, or see the full approach on the Nebula product page.
Comparing EA software rather than individual EAs? Our guide to the best EA software and how to choose it has a 7-question checklist, and our results page publishes how Nebula-built systems did on data they never saw, failures included.
Whatever platform you land on, the testing standard should be the same: out-of-sample data the strategy never saw, and a blind forward period before real money. The platform is a container; the discipline is the product.
