Weekend and Overnight Holding Rules at Prop Firms

Updated 3 min read Reviewed by

The direct answer: some prop firms allow holding positions overnight and over the weekend, some ban weekend holding outright, and some allow it during the evaluation but restrict it on funded accounts - or vice versa. There is no industry standard, the policy often differs by instrument (crypto CFDs trading through weekends complicate things), and firms revise these rules frequently. The only reliable answer for your account is the firm's current terms, checked recently.

Why the rules exist: gap risk

Markets close on Friday and reopen Sunday at wherever weekend news has put them. A stop-loss cannot protect a position through a gap - the market simply reopens beyond it and the order fills at the new price, sometimes far beyond the intended risk. From the firm's perspective, weekend holds convert its carefully calibrated drawdown rules (see what is drawdown) into uncapped exposure: a position sized to risk a small percentage can gap through both the stop and the account's breach line in one tick. Overnight holds carry a milder version of the same risk around session opens, plus swap costs. Banning or restricting the holds is the firm's blunt but effective answer.

The common rule shapes

  • Full weekend bans: all positions must be flat by a stated cut-off on Friday. Miss it and the firm may auto-close positions, count a violation, or both.
  • Stage-dependent rules: holding allowed during the challenge but restricted once funded - or allowed on "swing"-designated account types and banned on standard ones. Firms increasingly sell both variants; make sure you buy the one your strategy needs.
  • Instrument carve-outs: different treatment for crypto (which trades weekends), indices and metals. The cut-off times can differ per symbol too.
  • Overnight permissions with conditions: holds allowed but with reduced permitted exposure, or with floating P/L still counting against daily limits calculated at rollover.
  • News-adjacent overlaps: a Friday cut-off can arrive earlier when a major weekend event is scheduled - check announcements, not just the standing terms.

How the rules catch traders out - especially automated ones

  • EAs with no clock. An EA holding a position into Friday evening because its exit signal hasn't fired doesn't know the rulebook exists. The Friday-flat requirement must be coded as a forced exit - a standard pattern in designing prop-firm-safe EAs.
  • Server-time confusion. Cut-offs are defined in the firm's or platform's timezone, not yours. An EA flattening at the wrong "17:00" is a violation with extra steps.
  • Auto-close at bad prices. Where the firm force-closes at the cut-off, you're a market seller into the thinnest liquidity of the week - spread and slippage at their worst.
  • Swing strategies on non-swing accounts. A multi-day strategy backtested with weekend holds, run on an account that bans them, has its edge amputated by forced Friday exits - the backtest and the account are testing different strategies. Verify on demo first, as with everything in demo vs live trading.

Practical checklist

  1. Find the holding rules in the firm's current terms: overnight policy, weekend policy, per-instrument differences, exact cut-off time and timezone, and what happens at the cut-off (auto-close vs violation).
  2. Check whether the policy differs between evaluation and funded stages - and between account variants.
  3. If your strategy holds multi-day, buy the account type that permits it, or accept that your system needs redesigning - not the rulebook.
  4. Code the cut-off into any EA as a hard flatten, with the firm's server time, minutes early for safety.
  5. If you do hold where permitted, size for the gap, not the stop: assume the stop won't protect you over a weekend and cap exposure accordingly - the conservative logic of the 1% rule, applied to worst cases.

Bias declared

We build Nebula, a no-code EA builder whose prop-firm mode bakes daily-loss and drawdown caps into every generated EA - and time-based rules like Friday cut-offs are exactly the sort of constraint that belongs in code rather than in a phone reminder. Whatever you build with, a rule your EA can't see is a rule your EA will eventually break.

We are not affiliated with any prop firm mentioned. Rules change frequently - always verify against the firm's current terms. Trading carries a high level of risk; nothing here is financial advice.
