How Much Capital Do You Need to Run a Forex EA? - Orion RFX Trading Tools

To run a forex EA at 1% risk per trade with 0.01 lots, you need about £300 for a system with a 40 pip stop, or about £800 with a 100 pip stop. Below that, the smallest lot size forces you to risk more per trade.

"How much do I need to start?" is usually answered with a broker's minimum deposit. That number is marketing. The real answer comes from three pieces of arithmetic: the smallest position you are allowed to take, the distance to your system's stops, and the drawdown you need to survive. Work those through and the honest minimum is higher than the adverts - but lower than you might fear.

The lot-granularity floor

Position sizes come in steps - most brokers' smallest step is 0.01 lots (a micro lot, roughly £0.08 per pip on GBPUSD-like pairs). You cannot risk less than one step. So the smallest risk your account can take per trade is:

minimum lot × pip value × stop distance

Take a system with a 40-pip average stop. At 0.01 lots that is roughly £3 of risk per trade. For that to be 1% of the account - the classic ceiling from the 1% rule - you need about £300. With a 100-pip stop, closer to £800. A £100 account running that same system is forced to risk 3-8% per trade, not because the trader is reckless but because the maths offers nothing smaller. Losing streaks that a 1% account shrugs off become account-threatening at 5%. The full working is in our position size guide.

Drawdown headroom

Whatever your backtest's worst drawdown shows, live trading will eventually show you something similar - and treating the historical worst as a floor, not a ceiling, is basic prudence. Capital has to cover that drawdown while leaving the account big enough to keep sizing properly on the other side. An account sized so that the expected bad stretch takes it below the broker's margin requirements, or below the lot-granularity floor above, was never adequately funded - it just hadn't met its drawdown yet.

Costs bite harder when small

Spread and commission are charged per lot, so in percentage terms they are the same at any account size - but two effects punish small accounts anyway. Fixed minimum costs (some brokers' minimum commission per order) are proportionally larger on micro positions. And the temptation to compensate for a small account by trading bigger multiplies cost and risk together. A £200 account trading like a £2,000 one pays £2,000-account costs on £200 of cushion.

Realistic expectations by starting size

  • £100-300: enough to learn live execution honestly with micro lots on wide-stopped systems. Treat returns as tuition, not income.
  • £500-1,000: the zone where 1%-style risk management on typical stop distances becomes genuinely available.
  • £2,000+: room for proper sizing, drawdown headroom, and eventually more than one system - see portfolios vs single-pair EAs.

Compounding does the rest, slowly. A system compounding a realistic edge doubles over years, not weeks - anyone promising otherwise is selling the dream, a subject we covered bluntly in do forex robots actually work.

The prop-firm alternative

If the strategy is sound but the capital is not there, funded accounts flip the equation: pay an evaluation fee, pass the test, trade the firm's capital under its drawdown rules. For EA traders the fit depends entirely on whether the system was designed for those rules - daily-loss limits punish exactly the loose sizing that small self-funded accounts get forced into. Start with which prop firms allow EAs.

FAQ

What is the minimum amount to run a forex EA?

Mechanically, many brokers allow accounts from around £100 with 0.01-lot sizing. Practically, meaningful risk management on most systems starts somewhere around £500-1,000, because below that stop distances and minimum lot sizes force risk per trade above sensible levels.

Why do small accounts struggle with EAs?

Lot granularity. If the smallest position your broker allows already risks 3% of your account on the system's normal stop distance, you cannot size down to 1% - the maths, not the strategy, is against you.

Are prop firms a substitute for capital?

They can be. Funded accounts let you trade meaningful size for an evaluation fee instead of a deposit, at the price of drawdown rules your EA must be designed to respect.
