Lot Sizing for Gold (XAUUSD): Getting the Maths Right
The standard XAUUSD contract on most MT4/MT5 brokers is 100 troy ounces per 1.0 lot. That single fact drives all the maths: if gold moves $1.00, a 1.0-lot position gains or loses $100. Everything that goes wrong with gold sizing comes from importing forex habits - pips, standard pip values, familiar stop distances - into an instrument that uses none of them.
The core numbers
- 1.0 lot = 100 oz (on the common spec - always verify your broker's contract specification).
- A $0.01 move (one “cent”) = $1 per 1.0 lot.
- A $1.00 move = $100 per 1.0 lot.
- What counts as a “pip” on gold is a convention, not a standard - some platforms mean $0.10, others $0.01. This ambiguity alone causes tenfold sizing errors, which is why it's safer to work in dollar moves. (Background: what is a pip.)
An illustrative example
Illustrative numbers only. Account: £10,000, with £1 ≈ $1.25, so equity ≈ $12,500. Risk per trade: 1% ≈ $125, per the 1% rule. Strategy stop: $5.00 of gold movement (e.g. entry 2,400.00, stop 2,395.00).
Risk per 1.0 lot = $5.00 × $100 per dollar-move = $500.
Lots = 125 ÷ 500 = 0.25 lots.
Compare that with a forex-trained instinct: on EURUSD, a “50-pip stop” with 1.0 lot risks about $500 - and a $5.00 gold stop looks like “50 pips” on platforms quoting $0.10 pips. The numbers happen to align in this example, but only because we did the contract maths; guess the pip convention wrong and the position is 10× out. The general method is covered in how to calculate position size - gold just demands you feed it the right point value.
Why gold punishes sizing errors harder
- It moves. Gold's daily range, measured in its own dollar terms, is routinely large relative to the stops forex traders are used to. An oversized position meets an outsized move.
- Spreads are wider. Gold's spread is typically several times a major pair's when compared against equivalent movement, and it widens sharply around news and rollover.
- Slippage is real. Fast moves through round numbers fill orders away from intended levels - see what is slippage - so effective risk exceeds nominal risk more often than on majors.
- Margin surprises. At 100 oz per lot, notional value is large; with modest leverage, even a correctly risk-sized position can bump into margin limits on smaller accounts, forcing minimum-lot compromises that push real risk above plan.
Common mistakes
- Trading gold at the same lot size as EURUSD because “0.10 lots feels safe”. Lot numbers don't transfer across instruments; only risk calculations do.
- Trusting a generic pip-value calculator. Many quietly assume the forex convention. Derive value from the contract size instead: lots × 100 × dollar move.
- Ignoring the account currency conversion. XAUUSD profits and losses are in dollars; a GBP account's true risk drifts with GBPUSD.
- Backtesting with a fixed narrow spread. Gold's variable spread makes cost-realistic simulation essential - the theme of spread modelling in backtests.
Where Nebula fits
Nebula reads the live symbol's contract specification and computes lot sizes inside the EA, with hard risk caps enforced at execution - so a gold system risks what you configured, not what a forex-shaped assumption happened to produce.
