Do You Need a VPS for Forex EAs?

Do You Need a VPS for Forex EAs? - Orion RFX Trading Tools

An Expert Advisor only works while its MetaTrader terminal is open and connected. Close the laptop, lose power, or let Windows update itself at 3am, and your EA is blind until the terminal comes back. That is the whole reason a VPS - a small rented Windows machine that stays on - comes up in every automated-trading conversation.

Whether you need one comes down to uptime, not speed.

What a VPS actually solves

A VPS (virtual private server) is a Windows machine running in a data centre. You install MetaTrader on it, attach your EA, and disconnect - the terminal keeps running whether your own computer is on or not.

It solves three problems:

  • Uptime. The market trades 24/5. A machine that sleeps, reboots or loses Wi-Fi will miss trade management - trailing stops, exits, new signals.
  • Stability. Data-centre power and connectivity are far more reliable than home broadband.
  • Separation. Your trading terminal is not competing with games, browser tabs and updates on your daily machine.

What a VPS does not solve

A VPS does not make a losing strategy profitable, and for most EAs the latency argument is overstated. If your system trades on M15, H1 or H4 with stops measured in tens of pips, the difference between a 1 ms and a 100 ms connection to your broker is noise - a fraction of the spread on a single trade. Ultra-low latency only matters for high-frequency scalping, which carries its own problems around slippage and execution that most retail traders are better off avoiding.

When a home setup is genuinely fine

Plenty of traders run EAs from home successfully. It is fine when all of these hold:

  • A desktop or spare laptop can stay powered on Sunday night to Friday night;
  • Windows Update is set to restart outside market hours;
  • your broadband is stable (an outage of a few minutes is survivable for slower strategies - the EA re-syncs when the connection returns);
  • your strategy's stops live on the broker's server, so a disconnection cannot leave a position unprotected.

That last point is the important one. A properly built EA places its stop loss with the order, so even if your machine dies entirely, the worst case is missed management - not an unprotected position.

Choosing a VPS if you do need one

  • RAM: allow roughly 1 GB per MetaTrader terminal, plus 1-2 GB for Windows. 4 GB covers most single-account setups.
  • Location: pick a data centre near your broker's servers (most brokers publish this - London and New York are common). Near matters; obsessing over milliseconds does not.
  • Windows, not Linux: MetaTrader is a Windows application. Linux-plus-Wine setups exist but add failure modes.
  • Cost: £5-25/month is the normal range. Some brokers provide one free above a deposit threshold - check yours before paying.

Setup checklist

  • Connect over Remote Desktop, install MetaTrader, log into your account.
  • Attach the EA to its chart, enable algo trading, and confirm it shows as running.
  • Disable automatic restarts during market hours; set the terminal to launch on start-up as a fallback.
  • Log back in after a day and confirm the terminal is still connected and the EA is still on the chart.

Whatever machine hosts the terminal, monitor the system rather than trusting it. Uptime is only half of staying safe live - the other half is knowing when live behaviour drifts from the tested behaviour, which is why most EAs fail live for reasons that have nothing to do with hosting.

FAQ

Do I need a VPS to run a forex EA?

Only if your trading computer cannot stay on and connected for the whole trading week. An EA only manages trades while its MetaTrader terminal is running, so 24/5 uptime is the real requirement - a VPS is one way to get it, not the only way.

Does VPS latency matter for most EAs?

For strategies trading on M15 and above with sensible stop distances, the difference between 1 ms and 100 ms to your broker is immaterial. Latency mainly matters for high-frequency scalping, which most retail EAs should avoid anyway.

How much does a forex VPS cost?

Basic Windows VPS plans suitable for one or two MetaTrader terminals run roughly £5-25 per month. Some brokers offer a free VPS above a deposit or volume threshold.
