How to Install an EA in MetaTrader 4 (Step by Step)

To install an Expert Advisor in MetaTrader 4, copy the EA file into the MQL4 Experts folder inside the data folder, refresh the Navigator, drag the EA onto a chart, and turn on AutoTrading. Here is the full walkthrough, including how to tell at a glance whether the EA is actually live.

If you are brand new, it is worth two minutes on what MetaTrader is and what an Expert Advisor does first.

What you need

• MetaTrader 4 installed and logged in to a broker account - demo is the sensible starting point.
• Your EA file: a compiled .ex4, or an .mq4 source file.

Step-by-step installation

1. Open the data folder. In MT4, go to File → Open Data Folder. This is where MT4 actually reads EAs from.
2. Go to the Experts folder. Open MQL4 → Experts inside the data folder.
3. Copy your EA in. Paste the .ex4 or .mq4 file into Experts.
4. Refresh the Navigator. In MT4, open the Navigator (Ctrl+N), right-click Expert Advisors and choose Refresh - or simply restart MT4. Your EA appears in the list.
5. Drag it onto a chart. Open the symbol and timeframe the EA was designed for, then drag the EA from the Navigator onto the chart.
6. Tick the live-trading permission. In the properties window, on the Common tab, tick Allow live trading. Review the Inputs tab, then click OK.
7. Enable AutoTrading. Click the AutoTrading button in the top toolbar so it shows green. Without it, no EA on the platform can trade.

The smiley face check

MT4 gives you an instant status indicator in the top-right corner of the chart. A smiley face next to the EA name means it is enabled and allowed to trade. A sad or neutral face means one of the permissions is off - usually the AutoTrading button or the "Allow live trading" checkbox. Fix the switch and the face updates.

Common mistakes

• Wrong folder. The EA must go in MQL4 → Experts inside the data folder, not in Indicators, Scripts, or the installation directory.
• Skipping the refresh. The Navigator does not automatically detect new files.
• One switch of two. AutoTrading (global) and Allow live trading (per-EA) must both be on.
• Wrong chart. Attach the EA to the symbol and timeframe it was built for.
• No patience, no logs. If nothing trades, check the Experts and Journal tabs in the Terminal window before assuming it is broken - then run our troubleshooting checklist.

MT4 or MT5?

Note that .ex4 files do not run on MT5 or vice versa; you need the right build for your platform.
