How to Install an EA in MetaTrader 5 (Step by Step)
Installing an Expert Advisor in MetaTrader 5 takes about five minutes: copy the EA file into the platform's Experts folder, refresh the Navigator, drag it onto a chart, and switch on Algo Trading. This guide walks through each step, plus the two switches that stop most new installs from working.
New to the platform or to EAs generally? Start with what MetaTrader is and what an Expert Advisor actually does.
What you need
- MetaTrader 5 installed and logged in to a broker account (demo is fine).
- Your EA file - usually a compiled .ex5 file, sometimes an .mq5 source file.
Step-by-step installation
- Open the data folder. In MT5, go to File → Open Data Folder. This opens the folder MT5 actually reads from - not the Program Files directory.
- Navigate to the Experts folder. Inside the data folder, open MQL5 → Experts.
- Copy your EA file in. Paste the .ex5 (or .mq5) file into Experts. Subfolders are fine if you want to keep things tidy.
- Refresh the Navigator. Back in MT5, find the Navigator panel (Ctrl+N if hidden), right-click Expert Advisors and choose Refresh. Your EA should appear in the list. Restarting MT5 also works.
- Attach it to a chart. Open a chart of the symbol and timeframe the EA was built for, then drag the EA from the Navigator onto it.
- Allow algo trading for this EA. In the settings window that pops up, tick Allow Algo Trading on the Common tab, review the Inputs tab, then press OK.
- Switch on the global Algo Trading button. Click the Algo Trading button in the top toolbar so it turns green. This is the master switch - the per-EA checkbox does nothing without it.
How to confirm it is running
Look at the top-right corner of the chart. In MT5 you should see the EA's name with an icon indicating it is active (a small hat symbol). If the icon looks greyed out or crossed, one of the two switches above is off. The Experts tab in the Toolbox at the bottom of the screen will also log the EA initialising - and any errors.
Common mistakes
- Wrong folder. Copying the file anywhere other than MQL5 → Experts inside the data folder means the Navigator never sees it.
- Only one switch on. Both the global Algo Trading button and the per-EA "Allow Algo Trading" checkbox must be enabled.
- Wrong symbol or timeframe. Many EAs are built for a specific pair and chart period. Check the documentation that came with yours.
- Expecting instant trades. Most EAs wait for their conditions. If nothing happens after a fair wait, work through our EA troubleshooting checklist - or at minimum check the Experts and Journal tabs for messages.
- Going straight to live. Run any new EA on demo first. Here is why demo and live behave differently.
Does this apply to every EA?
Yes - any standard MT5 Expert Advisor installs this way, whether you bought it, coded it, or built it yourself. Systems built with Nebula export as standard MT5 EAs, so these exact steps apply: copy to Experts, refresh, drag on, switch on.
Once installed, the sensible next step is testing before risking anything - see how to backtest a strategy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use an EA in MT5?
Copy the .ex5 file into MQL5\Experts (File > Open Data Folder), refresh the Navigator, drag the EA onto a chart of the right symbol and timeframe, tick Allow Algo Trading on the Common tab, set its inputs, and switch on the Algo Trading button in the toolbar.
Can I run an EA on MT5 mobile?
No. The MetaTrader mobile apps can't run EAs. Run the EA in desktop MetaTrader or on a VPS and monitor it from your phone.
