The Best Forex Strategy for Beginners (and Why There's No 'Most Profitable' One)

3 min read Reviewed by

The best forex strategy for a beginner is a simple one with clear rules that you can test on past data and follow without second-guessing, usually a trend-following or breakout strategy on a higher timeframe, with a fixed stop-loss and small risk per trade. There is no "most profitable" strategy: every approach works in some market conditions and loses in others, and most of the difference between traders comes from risk management and discipline, not from finding a secret method.

What makes a strategy suitable for a beginner

  • Clear rules. You should be able to write the entry, exit and position size on one card. If a rule needs judgement, you can't test it.
  • A higher timeframe. 1-hour, 4-hour or daily charts give you time to think, and costs (spread and commission) are smaller compared with the size of each move.
  • A fixed stop-loss on every trade, and risk of around 1% of the account or less per trade while you learn. See our position size calculator.
  • Testable. You can check it on past data, then on a demo account, before risking money.

The main strategy types

Trend following

Buy when the market is rising and sell when it is falling, usually with a moving average or a breakout of recent highs or lows to define the trend. Trend followers lose small and often in sideways markets and make their results in a few long trends. It suits patient traders. What is trend following?

Breakouts

Enter when price breaks out of a range, such as the previous day's high or the Asian session range. Simple to define and test, but many breakouts fail, so the stop and the filter matter. What is a breakout strategy?

Mean reversion

Fade moves that have stretched too far from an average, expecting a return. It wins often with small gains, which feels good, but it can take large losses when a move keeps going, so it needs strict stops. What is mean reversion?

Momentum

Trade in the direction of strong recent moves. Related to trend following but faster. What is momentum trading?

Scalping

Many small trades on very low timeframes. Usually the hardest for beginners: costs take a large share of each trade and decisions must be fast. See the costs nobody models.

Why "most profitable strategy" is the wrong question

A strategy that made the most money last year usually did so because last year's market suited it, often with more risk than you would accept. Next year's market may not suit it at all. A strategy you understand, can test, and will actually follow through a losing run is worth more than a more profitable one you abandon after five losses. Most retail CFD accounts lose money, and the biggest causes are risk and discipline, not the strategy's indicator.

How to test a strategy honestly

  1. Write the rules down exactly.
  2. Test them on several years of past data, including costs; see how to backtest a strategy.
  3. Keep the most recent period back and test on it last, without changing the rules. If the strategy only works on the data you designed it on, it doesn't work; see overfitting explained.
  4. Trade it on a demo account for several weeks.
  5. Go live small, and keep the same rules.

Automating it

Once your rules are clear, they can run as an Expert Advisor, which removes the hesitation and second-guessing that trip most beginners up. Nebula, the EA software we make, goes a step further: it builds and tests strategies of these types for you on in-sample, out-of-sample and blind data, and only shows you the ones that held up. Frequently asked questions

What is the best forex strategy for beginners?

A simple strategy with clear rules that you can test and follow, usually trend following or breakouts on a higher timeframe such as 4-hour or daily, with a fixed stop-loss and small risk per trade.

What is the most profitable forex strategy?

There isn't one. Every strategy type works in some market conditions and loses in others, and last year's best performer often took more risk than most traders would accept. Results depend more on risk management and discipline than on the method.

What is the easiest forex strategy?

A moving-average trend-following or a daily breakout strategy is among the easiest to define, test and follow, because the rules are simple and the timeframe is slow.

How much should a beginner risk per trade?

Many traders risk around 1% of the account or less per trade while learning, with a fixed stop-loss, so a run of losses does not do serious damage.

Is scalping good for beginners?

Usually not. Costs take a large share of each small trade and decisions must be fast, which makes it one of the hardest styles to do well.
