What Moves Gold (XAUUSD)? The Main Drivers Explained
Nobody can reliably tell you whether XAUUSD will go up or down tomorrow, and anyone who says they can is guessing. What you can know is what moves gold: the US dollar, real interest rates, central bank demand, risk sentiment, and a short list of scheduled events where those things change quickly. Understanding the drivers won't tell you the next move, but it tells you when big moves are more likely and why gold behaves the way it does.
What XAUUSD is
XAUUSD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. "XAU" is the standard code for gold and "USD" is the dollar, so the price reflects both gold itself and the strength of the dollar. Most retail traders trade it as a CFD or spot contract with their broker; it is the same price as "spot gold", although each broker's quote and spread differ slightly. Gold trades almost 24 hours a day on weekdays, with a short daily break and the weekend close; check your broker's session times.
The main drivers
1. The US dollar
Because gold is priced in dollars, a stronger dollar tends to push XAUUSD down and a weaker dollar tends to lift it. The link isn't fixed, and there are long periods when both rise together, but it is the first thing to check when gold moves sharply.
2. Real interest rates
Gold pays no interest. When real yields (interest rates minus expected inflation, often watched through US inflation-protected Treasury yields) rise, holding gold becomes relatively less attractive; when they fall, the opposite. This is why US Federal Reserve decisions and expectations move gold so much.
3. Central bank buying
Central banks hold gold as a reserve asset, and in recent years several have been significant buyers. Large, steady official buying supports demand in a way that has nothing to do with short-term trading.
4. Risk sentiment and safe-haven demand
In periods of financial stress, conflict or political uncertainty, investors often buy gold as a store of value. These moves can be sudden and can reverse just as quickly when the worry fades.
5. Inflation expectations
Gold is often bought as a hedge against inflation. In practice the relationship works mostly through real interest rates, so inflation data matters most when it changes what the Fed is expected to do.
6. Physical demand and ETF flows
Jewellery and investment demand (strong in countries such as India and China) and flows in and out of gold-backed ETFs add or remove demand over weeks and months.
The events where gold moves most
- US Federal Reserve rate decisions, statements and press conferences (FOMC); see our FOMC page.
- US inflation data (CPI, PCE).
- US jobs data (Non-Farm Payrolls).
- Major geopolitical news.
Spreads widen and prices can jump around these releases. If you trade gold with an EA, check whether it has a news filter and how it handles gaps; see news filters in EAs.
Why gold is hard to trade
- It moves a lot. Gold's daily range is large compared with major currency pairs, so position size matters more. Use a gold pip calculator before you size a trade.
- Costs are higher than on the major currency pairs, especially around news.
- Grid and martingale gold EAs are common and dangerous, because gold's big trends punish averaging into losers; see gold grid EAs.
Trading gold systematically
Rather than predicting direction, systematic traders test rules on gold's history and keep only those that hold up on data they weren't built on. Nebula, the EA software we make, builds and tests gold strategies this way, with in-sample, out-of-sample and blind windows; see Nebula for gold or our guide to choosing a gold EA.
Frequently asked questions
Will XAUUSD go up or down?
Nobody can reliably predict gold's next move. What moves it is known: the US dollar, real interest rates, central bank demand, risk sentiment and inflation expectations, with the biggest moves around Fed decisions and major US data.
Is gold the same as XAUUSD?
XAUUSD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars, the same as the spot gold price. Brokers' quotes and spreads differ slightly.
Why does gold go down when the dollar goes up?
Gold is priced in dollars, so a stronger dollar makes it more expensive in other currencies and tends to push the dollar price down. The relationship is common but not fixed.
What time does gold trade?
Gold trades almost 24 hours a day on weekdays, with a short daily break and a weekend close. Exact times depend on your broker.
How much is one pip on gold?
It depends on your broker's contract size and how they quote gold, so use a gold pip calculator with your broker's details before sizing a trade.
