Which Broker Is Best for MT5? What UK Traders Actually Say (2026)
There is no single best broker for MT5: the right one depends on where you live, what you trade and what you will pay. For UK traders the first filter is regulation: is the broker's UK company authorised by the FCA, and does it offer MetaTrader 5 to UK clients? Of the popular brokers we checked, Pepperstone, IG, Vantage, OANDA and Tickmill have FCA-authorised UK firms offering MT5. Several brokers popular with MT5 traders worldwide have no FCA-authorised route for UK clients, and the FCA has published warnings about two of them.
We don't recommend brokers and this page has no affiliate links. It sets out what anyone can check: regulation, each broker's own published loss figure, Trustpilot ratings, and the themes in user reviews, summarised in our own words. Popular MT5 brokers without an FCA-authorised route for new UK clients
These brokers are widely used for MT5 elsewhere in the world. If you are in the UK, check carefully before opening an account: a firm that is not authorised by the FCA gives you no access to the Financial Ombudsman Service or FSCS protection.
| Broker | UK position | Trustpilot** | What reviewers praise | What reviewers complain about |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IC Markets | The FCA has published a warning that IC Markets Global (icmarkets.com/global and ic.com) is not authorised and may be targeting people in the UK. Its global site names a Seychelles-regulated entity. Source. | 4.8 from 56,862 | Fast live-chat support; easy setup | Withdrawal delays; slow email support |
| FP Markets | The FCA published a warning on 11 October 2024 that FP Markets (fpmarkets.com) is not authorised and may be targeting people in the UK. It is regulated in other countries. Source. | 4.8 from 10,334 | Fast, professional support | Withdrawal delays; some execution complaints |
| Exness | Its UK company is reported to serve professional clients only; UK retail traders would be signed up overseas, if at all. We could not confirm this on the FCA register. | 4.7 from 32,895 | Fast deposits and withdrawals; tight spreads | Funds stuck or limited withdrawal methods; verification problems |
| AvaTrade | Its EU company is in the FCA's run-off regime for existing UK contracts and cannot take new UK customers. | 4.8 from 13,495 | Proactive account managers; easy onboarding | Withdrawal delays; accounts blocked with little explanation |
| XM | UK clients were reportedly moved to a sister brand, Trading.com; we could not confirm XM's current UK status on the FCA register. Source. | Not shown: Trustpilot says the rating is unavailable due to a breach of its guidelines (3,129 reviews) | Little praise on recent reviews | Frozen accounts; blocked or slow withdrawals; deposits not credited |
| Admirals | Admiral Markets UK Ltd is FCA-authorised (595450), but we could not confirm whether it currently takes new UK retail clients. | 4.2 from 2,167 | User-friendly platforms; low costs | Strict document requirements; some withdrawal delays |
What the reviews do and don't tell you
- The same complaints appear everywhere. Withdrawal delays, repeated identity checks and accounts closed without explanation show up for almost every broker. Some reflect real problems; some reflect anti-money-laundering checks that regulated brokers are required to carry out.
- High ratings aren't proof of safety. Some of the highest Trustpilot scores here belong to brokers with no FCA authorisation for UK clients. Regulation and protection matter more than stars.
- Low ratings aren't proof of wrongdoing. Unhappy customers write more reviews, and a run of complaints after one event can pull a score down quickly.
- The loss figures are similar everywhere (65-77% here), because leveraged trading is hard, not because of the broker.
What to check before you choose an MT5 broker
- Regulation. Search the firm on the FCA register and check the website you are on belongs to that authorised firm (clones of real brokers exist). Check the FCA Warning List.
- MT5 for your country. Many brokers offer MT5 internationally but only MT4 or their own platform in the UK.
- Total trading costs on the instruments you trade: spread plus commission plus overnight swap. Our spread cost calculator helps compare.
- EA rules. Most MT5 brokers allow Expert Advisors, but some restrict scalping, very frequent trading or news trading. Read the terms.
- Withdrawals. Methods, fees and typical times, and what documents they will ask for.
- Your own test. Open a demo account, then start live with a small amount and make a withdrawal before you commit more.
Running EAs: why the broker matters
The same EA can behave differently at different brokers, because price data, spreads, commissions and execution differ. Test any EA on your own broker before trusting someone else's results; our MT5 Strategy Tester guide shows how. Nebula, the EA software we make, works with any MT4 or MT5 broker: it compiles each system it builds for your own terminal and gives you the Strategy Tester settings to reproduce its backtest on your broker's data. CFDs and spread bets are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Consider whether you understand how they work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
Frequently asked questions
Which broker is best for MT5?
There is no single best MT5 broker; it depends on your country, what you trade and your costs. For UK traders, start with brokers whose UK company is FCA-authorised and offers MT5 to UK clients. Of those we checked on 2 October 2026, that included Pepperstone, IG, Vantage, OANDA and Tickmill. Then compare total costs, withdrawal terms and EA rules.
Which UK brokers offer MetaTrader 5?
Of the brokers we checked on 2 October 2026, Pepperstone, IG, Vantage, OANDA and Tickmill offer MT5 to UK clients through FCA-authorised UK firms. FXCM and CMC Markets offer MT4 to UK clients, and Plus500 uses its own platform only.
Is IC Markets FCA regulated?
IC Markets' global business is not FCA-authorised. The FCA has published a warning that IC Markets Global, at icmarkets.com/global and ic.com, is not authorised and may be targeting people in the UK.
Are Trustpilot ratings a good way to choose a broker?
Only as one input. Trustpilot profiles cover customers worldwide, weight recent reviews and attract more complaints than praise. Some of the highest-rated brokers have no FCA authorisation for UK clients, so check regulation first.
Do MT5 brokers allow Expert Advisors?
Most do, but some restrict scalping, very frequent trading or news trading. Read the broker's terms before running an EA, and test the EA on that broker's data in the Strategy Tester.
Screens show backtests and simulations. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. Trading involves risk to your capital.
