How to Run EAs on a Mac: MetaTrader 5 and 4 on macOS

Yes, you can run EAs on a Mac. MetaQuotes provides official Mac installers for MetaTrader 5 and MetaTrader 4. They set up a compatibility layer (Wine) and install the Windows version of MetaTrader inside it, and they support Apple silicon Macs from M1 onwards. Once installed, you add an EA exactly as on Windows. Most EAs work; ones that rely on Windows DLL files are the usual exception, and for those a Windows virtual machine or a VPS is more reliable.

Install MetaTrader on a Mac

1. Download the Mac installer from MetaTrader's website or your broker's site (many brokers offer their own Mac download).
2. Run it. It downloads and configures Wine, then installs MetaTrader. MT5 needs macOS Catalina 10.15.7 or later; MT4 needs macOS Big Sur or later.
3. Open MetaTrader and log in to your broker account.

Install an EA on a Mac

1. In MetaTrader, click File > Open Data Folder. On a Mac this opens the folder inside MetaTrader's Wine setup, so always use this menu rather than looking for it in Finder.
2. Open MQL5 > Experts (or MQL4 > Experts) and copy in the .ex5 or .ex4 file.

EA not working on a Mac? Check these

• It needs a DLL. If the Experts tab shows DLL errors, the EA depends on Windows libraries that may not work under Wine. Use Parallels or a Windows VPS instead.
• The file is in the wrong place. Use File > Open Data Folder; a copy in Downloads or Applications won't be seen.
• The Mac went to sleep. An EA only runs while MetaTrader is open and connected. Stop the Mac sleeping, or use a VPS.
• The usual switches. Algo Trading off, wrong symbol or timeframe; see the EA troubleshooting checklist.
